After a large and leisurely breakfast we set off from Preston to Morecombe to begin our epic journey at 11.15. Riding together as a well drilled group we rode through Morecombe and Lancaster out into the beautiful Trough of Bowland. As the roads became quieter our pace and moods lifted in the fantastic rolling scenery (think Postman Pat scenery). Through Wray and Clapham, some of us taking in a bit of mountainbiking (on road bikes) before passing the famous 3 peaks, Austwick before dropping into Settle for a late lunch. The road out of Settle was seriously seriously steep had all but Wilson, Elkins and Torn walking! The decent though (from Rye Loaf hill) was absolutely amazing (author reaching 51 mph). On through Airton and Cracoe, ending just short of Grassington and 50 miles with day 1 done!
For his consistent breakaways off the front alongside the pros Wilson and Elkins
today's yellow jersey goes to Jack Torn! Chapeux!
Tomorrow will be fun - much earlier start - many more miles....and more importantly many more hills!
Please, please comment and contribute - your additions make us all laugh!
Photos to follow!
Cheers!
I've just found my supposed best mate has nicked my fone and is now sat eating curry in a semi-drunk state using it to post messages as me - please ignore him!
ReplyDeleteWell done guys. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHaving spent the evening at the NNUH the fundraising seems even more important.
Oh and nice one Jack...
Was very impressed.. Those hills are very steep and everyone tackled them with grit, determination and gpod humour. Only jw's shocking sense of direction let the side down.
ReplyDeleteSo so proud of the team yesterday. The worry with this gig has never been the distance - 170 miles in 3 days is pretty modest. It's the fact that we're going over the Pennines, the spine of England that has always worrieed me.
ReplyDeleteAs a reasonably experienced cyclist now I can honestly say doing LEJOG last summer posed no greater challenges than the climb we faced yesterday pm - yet we ALL managed it - an amazing achievement with only 3 months training!
Day 2 later will be even tougher and will pose a real challenge - but one this amazing bunch of people will take in their stride - for Tom and all other sick children's sake.
Great to hear that you are all in one piece. Good luck today. We are all 100% behind you. Keep us informed when you can - some of us are watching avidly (whilst watching peppa pig).
ReplyDeleteImproved sleep didn't last then John?!

Why can't a bicycle stand up on it's own?
